"Moving Notes"

The "Moving Notes" exhibit encouraged children to create melodies and music through motion and color association. The multi-colored stands each had patented tubular sound producers with internal tuned strings arranged to appear as black note stems. The stands amplified the tones and served as note identifiers using both traditional treble staff notation and color coding. The stands were activated by simply tapping the tops of the black tubes. Colored note squares on the floors suggested sequences for the children to play familiar melodies by first placing the matching stands in a row, then tapping them in order.

The "Transparent Piano" was a display constructed from an old piano. The piano's case pieces were cut and fitted with Plexiglas to reveal the interior of the instrument. Individual action pieces were painted as a special project by local children.

 

"Tubular Harp" -Discover Westfield Children's Museum Westfield, MA   The patented "Tubular Harp" utilized different sized copper tubes fitted on each end with ball bearings. When the tubes were twisted by hand, music wire of different lengths and pitches tensioned inside were plucked and amplified through the tube walls. The exhibit allowed the children to play and hear the unique timbres of tensioned strings without actually touching them (and possibly being harmed by them). Conversely, the strings were protected from the children. Also, potential damage and danger from the use of mallets was eliminated.
